If you abolish something you do away with it.

Having said that, I must point out that in the street vernacular “do away with” might sometimes mean kill. That’s not what abolish means.

An example of the correct use of the word abolish is, “Canada abolished capital punishment in 1976.” Another way to say the same thing is, “In 1976, Canada formally eliminated the use of the death penalty.”

In reference to my note about the killing meaning of “do away with” not being synonymous with abolish, an example of the incorrect use of abolish would be, “Canada formally eliminated the use of the death penalty in 1976, meaning that the country no longer allowed its justice and correctional systems to abolish people who abolished other people.”
