acolyte

An acolyte is someone who assists in a religious ceremony or procession.

I wonder, is that like an apprentice? Are they hoping for a promotion to a job where they’ll get to talk to God directly, rather than someone who only assists someone who talks to and/or parades before God?

If it is like an apprenticeship, I hope it’s a paid apprenticeship. I find all religious services to be excruciatingly boring and more than a little silly. I would hate to think that acolytes were doing it for free—even if there is a hope that God will eventually pay them.
