addict

An addict feels a strong recurring need for a substance or activity. When one thinks of addicts one usually thinks of people addicted to illegal drugs. Of course, this is far from the only addiction. Just as a small sample, people can also become addicted to prescription drugs, alcohol, caffeine, gambling, sex and porn.

I suppose it’s a good thing I’m not addicted to sex because I’m a firm believer that no means no. I just wish it were said less often. Or, at least, said less often to me.

Here’s something for us all to ponder: In the unlikely event that there is a god, why did He, She or It give some people brains that are more susceptible, and in some cases much more susceptible, to addictions than is the average among humans? If He, She or It created addicts’ addiction-prone brains, shouldn’t He, She or It give them a get-out-of-hell free card for any sins they commit as a result of their addictions? It seems only fair, doesn’t it?

Here’s a question for lexicographers and legislators: Are pimps the equivalent of drug dealers for people who are addicted to sex?

Addict can also be used as a verb. In this case, addict is the process of becoming hooked on a substance or activity to the point where going without it would cause debilitating mental anguish. A drug dealer might, for example, push free or low-cost narcotics on someone in the hope that this will addict the person to the drug, with the hoped for result being that the future addict (noun) will, in the future, be willing to pay everything they have and then some just to get their fix.

Hmm. I wonder if hookers ever give out free services in an attempt to addict prospective clients to sex.

I also wonder, if hookers do that, and if I were to take advantage of a free sample, would I then have to answer “yes” when, before donating blood, the Canadian Blood Services asks me, “Have you ever paid money or drugs for sex.” Probably so.

Oh well, I guess I’ll have to pass on that sort of free sample. I think it’s important to do the occasional good deed. Giving blood is my only good deed. I’d hate to have to start helping old ladies cross the road. They usually walk so slowly and rarely give out free hooker services.
