If you are adept at something you are very skilled or proficient at it. If I’m adept at something I’m amazed. I’m more than a bit of a klutz and an expert at absolutely nothing.

I like to think I’m almost adept at writing. Some people disagree. Unfortunately, their disagreement isn’t because they think I’m on the good side of almost.

Adept can also be used as a noun, but you generally have to work hard at using it that way. You might, for instance, talk about a collection of people who are adept at something as “the adept,” but, as I said, that’s kind of an awkward phrasing. Clearly, dictionaries don’t give a damn about whether or not they make conversation awkward for us.
