Admirable means deserving high esteem or regard.

What are admirable qualities? Honesty is definitely an admirable quality. Without honesty how could we trust our politicians, home renovation contractors and used-car salespeople? Right. We far too often can’t.

Modesty too is generally considered to be admirable. For me, this goes hand in hand with honesty. I’m not good at anything, so for me modesty is honesty. People who are experts or proficient in one or more areas have a harder time of it. They have to either shut up or choose between honesty and modesty.

A strong work ethic is frequently deemed to be an admirable quality as well. However, that’s mainly the opinion of company shareholders who sit home and receive dividend checks from their investment in the hard work of others. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Loyalty is also often judged to be admirable, but typically only by the people to whom other people are being loyal. Loyalty can be admirable at times, but not always. There were a lot of people who were loyal to Hitler. Needless to say, I wouldn’t call them admirable. Instead, I’d call them words that would cause this Web site to be blocked by adult content filters.
