aegis

I can honestly say that, until now, I don’t think I’ve ever said or written the word aegis. I’ve heard it before. I had a general sense of what it means thanks to the context in which I’ve heard and seen it used, but that was the extent of my familiarity with aegis.

Aegis is the auspices or support of or the auspices of a person or organization.

I need to start employing this word more often because I think it’s one of the really cool words in our language. I guess I’m going to have to start working on getting the support of or the ability to work under the auspices of more people and organizations, or at least one person or organization, so I have more cause to use it.

An example of the use of the word aegis would be, “The peace negotiations between the warring factions were conducted under the aegis of the IOPDI, the International Organization for the Promotion of the Defense Industry. This was likely a major factor in the failure of the talks and the resulting increase in the intensity of the hostilities.”
