affectionate

If you show fondness for someone you are affectionate to that person. If you show fondness for most people then you are generally affectionate. In the latter case, i.e., you are affectionate in general, then, while it may be unjust, you’ll eventually run across some men who will take that affection the wrong way. Probably me.

Sorry about that. I’m lonely and desperate for any affection and, preferably, more from women. On the bright side, I have zero self-confidence, so I almost certainly won’t proposition you. As a result of misreading your affection, I’ll just have lascivious thoughts about you, which may or may not show on my face, but which I won’t act on.

Affectionate can also mean resulting from affection. For example, if you are a woman and you show me some affection, I’ll likely feel affection or more toward you (see previous paragraph), which might lead me to cast an affectionate glance in your direction.

If you’re a guy and show me some affection, I’ll probably shake your hand. I don’t swing that way, but I have no problem with people who do and would be pleased to be friends with them.
