Affliction is pain, suffering or distress or the thing that causes pain, suffering or distress.

Affliction can cover a lot of ground and it’s a judgement call as to what gets included. For example, some teenagers might consider a minor case acne to be a grave affliction. On the other hand, if you’ve watched loved ones die of cancer or some other dread disease you would likely be of the mind to reserve the word affliction for something more serious than a minor case of acne. I’m just saying.

I was surprised to learn that the word affliction also has a meaning in the risible field of astrology. But astrology is even more ridiculous than religion, so I don’t want to give it any credence here.
