An afterthought can be a thought that you had after you put a related idea into action. It might also be something that was added to something else or an activity that was added to a course of action after that thing was created or that course of action commenced.

The thought that I might be crazy to undertake a project to write comments on every word dictionary was not an afterthought. I realized that was very likely—almost certain—before I started, but I undertook the project anyway.

The third paragraph in this entry, i.e., this one, was an afterthought. My first draft of this entry had only two paragraphs. After putting it aside for a while, it came into my mind that a two-paragraph entry was too short, so I added this paragraph as an afterthought.
