An airliner is a passenger plane operated by an airline. At least, that’s what my dictionary tells me but, at least in my circles*, the word airliner rarely used these days?
I don’ know about you, but I usually say plane or airplane rather than airliner. I seem to vaguely recall airliner being used in my younger days, but not recently
Today, we might say something to the effect of, “What the hell? You’re going to make me pay for this wretched excuse for food on this freaking plane?” Some passengers might substitute another eff word for “freaking,” but I don’t want to get thrown off the airplane, particularly not at 30,000 feet.
In contrast, in the past we might have said, “The food isn’t great on this airliner, but at least it’s free.”
Come to think of it, I miss the days of airliners.
* In truth, I don’t have circles. I tend to live in and among squares.
