Akimbo sounds like it should be something Japanese, doesn’t it? I always think of a kimono when I see the word akimbo. I always picture a voluptuous, otherwise naked woman under that kimono, which tends to distract me from my other thoughts for quite some time.
Right. Where was I? Oh, yeah. Akimbo.
Umm. Where was I? Oh, yeah. Akimbo.
OK. I think I’m able to move on now.
Akimbo means nothing of the sort. Technically, it means that your hands are on your hips and your elbows are turned outward.
However, that’s not how the word is most often used. When you say something (possibly, but not necessarily your limbs) is akimbo you mean that it is spread out widely or haphazardly.
That is to say, that’s what you should mean by it. If you mean something else then you’re almost certainly using the word akimbo incorrectly.
