In one sense of the word, akin is very closely related to the phrase “a kin.” A kin is someone who is related to you. The meaning of akin is that the subjects of the sentence descended from a common ancestor.

With any luck, it was a very rich common ancestor who left his or her wealth to his or her descendants, but that has nothing to do with the definition of the word akin, so never mind.

Akin also means similar to. In this sense, you might say that kin related by blood are usually akin to each other. But that could be true regardless of which sense of the word akin you are talking about. So that example wasn’t much help, was it?

Sorry about that.
