I don’t know why, but I can’t see the word alas without the word alack following immediately behind it in my mind. There’s probably a well-known quote—it sounds like it comes from Shakespeare, but probably not—that included “alas, alack” but I don’t know.
Oh, damn! I just realized I already said something almost identical to the above when I wrote an entry on the word alack. Never mind.
Alas is a word that you use to express disappointment or unhappiness. I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you’ll be feeling more upbeat soon.
