The word ale should not be confused with the word ail.

Ale is sometimes used as a synonym for beer, but it is more correctly used to name an alcoholic drink that is also malted and hopped, but stronger and more bitter than beer.

Ail, on the other hand, is a verb that means to cause to suffer.

Then again, if you drink too much ale it may result in a hangover that will ail you. On the other hand, if you are already ailing, a few good ales might cause you to forget your ailments temporarily. That wouldn’t be such a bad thing, now would it?

The preceding paragraph was a pile of silliness that I’m not proud of and would like to forget. A few ales might help me with that.
