Many people get the word allot wrong. Allot means “a great many.” It is important to note here that a bad many, a so-so many, a better than average many, a good, but not great many or any other many that is less than great doesn’t count as an allot. This brings up the question of what is a many? For the answer to that question you’ll have to wait until someone here at The Words Project gets around to defining the word many. We’ll probably all be dead long before that happens, so just use your imagination.
Why have so many people come to misuse the word allot so often? That’s an excellent question. The easy thing to do would be to apportion blame equally among bad parenting, inadequate school systems and misinformed dictionary writes, but the bulk of the fault must be attributed to the supreme ignorance of us humans.
