alpha particle

Alpha particle is a noun phrase that means “the first comparatively meaningless word to have ever been spoken in an, if only arguably, grammatically correct sentence.”

Many people think the alpha particle is one of the words “in,” “up,” “off,” or “over” when it was first used with a verb to make a phrasal verb, such as to say, “I clean up my kitchen once a year whether it needs it or not because domestic hygiene is important,” rather than, “I clean my kitchen once a year whether it needs it or not because domestic hygiene is important.” Many people are wrong.

The alpha particle is “totally.” In particular, it is “totally” when used in the phrase “totally awesome.” Those other words pale in comparison on the comparatively meaningless scale and, therefore, don’t qualify.
