The word anaesthesia (noun) refers to an archetypical character that appears in many Russian novels. An anaesthesia character can take on almost any physical form and can be either male or female. The only common trait that defines a role as being an anaesthesia character is that he or she is at least somewhat dazed at times, to the point where he or she is not conscious of his or her local surroundings or, possibly, of the world in general.

Most Russian authors aren’t so obvious as to give their anaesthesia characters a name that sounds like “anaesthesia.” However, there are a few who do give a wink to the existence of the archetype by making the character female and calling her Anastasia.
